How to throw the ultimate Squid Game Party?

1. Invitations

Start by setting the tone with themed invitations. One idea would be to design your invites to look like the mysterious brown invitation cards from the show. Add the iconic shapes: circle, triangle, and square on one side. Then on the other side just a telephone number or a bit more information like invitee, location, date and time. This could then go to a voicemail, to tell the person what the invite is for.

2. Dress Code

Encourage your guests to dress up as either their favourite characters, or come in the contestant green tracksuits. Provide spare green tracksuits if you can afford them, or other green clothing you may have lying around.

Some other costumes that could be worn by the guests or the hosts are:

The red jumpsuits and masks of the guards.

The black costume for the Front Man.

3. Decorations

Transform your venue into a Squid Game set. Use the following ideas to enhance the ambiance:

Colour Scheme

Game set colours: The colours in the TV show game sets are bold children’s playground style colours. They are predominantly shades of green, red, blue and yellow.

Accomodation set colours: The accomodation for the players consists of one large room filled with bunkbeds. The set is prison like and the colours give it a dreary cold mood. They consist of black bunk beds, white bedding and grey and aqua blue walls.

Banners and Posters

Print out posters of key scenes, the giant doll from “Red Light, Green Light,” and the foreboding staircase.

Props

Create large shapes (circle, triangle, square) and place them around the party area. You can also include a backdrop, or standee cutouts of the guards for photo opportunities.

4. Squid Game Themed Party Games

The games from the show are based on classic children games, but with a deadly twist. These games are some you probably already know of from your childhood. Keep things safe and recreate some of them with the Squid Game atmosphere.

If you want all of your guest to play each game, you could have a tally of who wins each game and the person with the highest tally wins overall. If not and to be true to the show, when you are eliminated that’s it, but you may find you won’t be able to play all of games unless you have a big group.

Ddakji (Paper Flip Game)

Supply red and blue paper origami Ddakji squares, for the flipping game played at the train station. The objective is to take it in turns and try to flip over your opponents coloured card. Have a few game rounds to get the winner.

Red Light, Green Light (Statues)

Easy set up

Play the classic game with the Squid Game twist. Use a recording of the creepy song from the show and play and stop the music. Ask the players to exit the game who move on “red light.”

Hard set up

For this you could dress up in the creepy dolls costume (sold online) and then use a water pistol to eliminate the players once you turn around, or when another host (in a guards red jumpsuit) stops the music.

If you have a large garden, you could set it up so that the contestants need to get past a rope line on the floor in the garden, where the host stands.

A large timer could also be used depending on how elaborate you want the game to be and true to the show. If the time runs out the last people remaining who haven’t past the line get shot with the water pistol and eliminated.

Dalgona Candy Challenge

Easy set up

Provide honeycomb toffee with shapes carved into them (triangle, circle, star and umbrella in the show). Give guests a needle and challenge them to carve out the shape without breaking it. If they break the shape their out.

Hard set up

The host dresses in a guards red jumpsuit and if the players break it they get shot with a water pistol and eliminated.

To make it harder have a large timer like in the show. If the player doesn’t get the shape out within the timeframe, eliminate them with the water pistol.

Tug of War

Easy set up

Organise a friendly game of tug of war, making sure to emphasise safety. Whatever team looses a few games of tug of war is out.

Hard set up

In the show there is a deadly drop for the team that looses. Keep it safe and instead use a 3D illusion rug, so players can see a drop but without the consequences.

Marbles

Easy set up

Ask the players to get into a pair of their choosing. Once in a pair and as in the show, then tell them to play a game of marbles against one another. Give them 10 marbles each and tell them they have to play whatever games they want against each other using the marbles. Say there is a timer of 30 minutes and whoever looses all of their 10 marbles against their opponent, or doesn’t have all 10 from playing a game against them in the 30 minutes is eliminated.

Hard set up

The host is dressed in a guards red tracksuit and eliminates the players with a water pistol during and after the 30 minutes, depending on who looses all 10 of their marbles, or doesn’t have all 10 at the end of the time.

If there is an odd number of players get them all to pull straws, or another quick decider game. Whoever pulls the short straw is eliminated (with a water pistol if you have one).

The Glass Bridge

Easy set up

This game is quite hard to replicate, in the show the wrong step onto a breakable glass resulted in a fall to the death. The safest and easiest way is to get people to step onto something is using something such as card. Write on the back of the card that they need to turn over when they jump on them. For the ones that eliminate players put a big X on them admit the ones that are ok put a big O on them.

Hard set up

Buy cheap thin cardboard boxes or make a cardboard ring, ideally all the same size and easy to step on. Then have half filled up water balloons inside them. When someone steps on the ones with the water in they are eliminated and it will then also show players which boxes they can’t step on next.

In the show there are two rows of tiles, so they can either go forward one or sideways one, or jump one. The goal is to reach the end platform.

Squid Game

Squid Game areas. Including triangle, square and circles, with labeled descriptions

Easy set up

You will need to play outside and mark the ring out. Use some white rope and pegs (be careful so that no one trips over it), or mark in sand, or line marking spray paint.

Split the players into two teams, with the same amount of players on each team (I.e. 3 against 3):

The attacking team

Attackers base: The attackers base is the top circle outside of the triangle point.

Objective: The attackers start outside the squid. They can move out of their base and around the perimeter of the squid. To win, they must enter the squid from the bottom circle (the only entrance and exit to the castle). Then they must proceed to and step foot in the top inside circle where the triangular point goes into it (the defenders base).

How to move: Attackers in their attackers base can stand on two feet.

Outside the squid (castle) they must hop on one foot. In the bottom circle (entrance/ exit to the castle) they can stand on two feet. Inside the castle and up to the top circle (defenders base) they must hop on one foot.

The defending team

Defenders base: The defenders base is the triangle point that goes in the top circle.

Objective: The defenders must not let the attackers inside their base and must eliminate them.

How to move: Defenders can stand on two feet inside their Defenders base and inside walls of the squid (castle) that’s below the waste. Above the waste and up to the top circle (their Defenders base) they must hop on one foot. In the bottom circle (entrance/ exit to the castle) they can stand on two feet. Outside the castle and if they decide to venture out to fight the attackers they must hop on one foot.

Eliminating a player

To attack and eliminate players you need to either get them to fall over, stand on a boundary line, or enter or exit the squid (castle) without going through the bottom circle (entrance/ exit to the castle).

You can do this by:

Defending team grabs an attacking team player and pulls them inside castle wall.

Player makes another player fall over by grabbing, or by using foot that’s in the air whilst standing on one foot to trip player up with it.

Players are also eliminated if they stand on two feet in areas they should be on one foot in.

Bonus

To take off your handicap so that you don’t need to hop a player will need to get to and run across the squids waste and then onto the bridge, that leads to the other side of the waste. They must enter the waste by one of either circles at the ends of it, outside of the squid. They can use two feet in this section, however in the middle of it (on the bridge) the attacking players must hop on one foot, the defending players can be on two feet because it’s their squid. Two feet bonus is awarded on exiting the wastes circle. Players can grab players inside of the waste to try and pull them out of it to eliminate them.

5. Squid Game Food and Drinks

Create a menu inspired by the series:

Dalgona Candy: Serve the honeycomb toffee from the game.

Korean Snacks: Include popular Korean snacks like tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), kimbap (seaweed rice rolls), and various street foods.

Themed Drinks: Offer red and green cocktails or mocktails, and consider naming them after characters or elements from the show.

6. Prizes

For added excitement, offer themed prizes for game winners. Consider giving out:

Miniature Coffins: Fill small boxes designed to look like the show’s coffins with treats or trinkets.

Squid Game Merchandise: Give out items like keychains, masks, or even T-shirts.

Plastic see through ball: Like in the Squid Games, have money or prizes in a large see through ball and so that your guests can see what’s up for grabs.

7. Photo Booth

Set up a photo booth with props and backdrops that resemble the show’s sets. This can include the giant doll, the bunk beds, and cut out standee characters. Provide props like masks and tracksuits for guests to pose with.

8. Safety First

While it’s fun to replicate the show’s games, ensure all activities are safe and non-hazardous. Avoid any games that could lead to injury and always have a first aid kit on hand.

Conclusion

With these Squid Game party ideas, you’re sure to host a thrilling and memorable event that will have your guests talking long after the party ends. Just remember to keep the atmosphere fun and lighthearted, ensuring everyone enjoys the experience without the life-or-death stakes of the series. Perhaps have a tally so that everyone can play all the games. If you want to play, why not hire someone to host the games, wearing a costume and holding a water pistol. Happy planning, and may the odds be in your favour!
